Drug Aware Margaret River Pro – Round 1
1st Gabriel Medina (BRA) 15.40
2nd John John Florence (HAW) 14.67
3rd Kolohe Andino (USA) 12.50
Born in December, this quiver had patiently awaited till the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro to shine. Gabriel Medina scored the highest scored wave in Day 1 on a Pukas DFK step-up shaped by Johnny Cabianca.
Here is Johnny’s take on the quiver:
This quiver was made for Hawaii in December, here at Pukas in Spain. Gabriel Medina used an average DFK during the heat and had a MEGA as a backup (Charles was there with it).
The Pukas DFK was a 6’1 x 19 x 2 3/8, has a really normal rocker with a slight concave (5 1/4 in the nose and 2 7/16 on the end of the tail). Volume: 28 liters. He choose this board because it is steadier in this kind of strong wind conditions. The MEGA waiting for him at the beach has the same measurements and liters but it is more ‘banana’, meaning is has a lot of rocker. He would use this in cleaner conditions. It’s the right choice for waves with longer sections and faster maneuvers.
Having Bells as the next ASP venue, Gabriel has more to choose from: he has good semi-guns and many Pukas DFKs and MEGAs with different measurements.
